Framework study plans

Study plans for the Czech Studies programme are divided into two basic modules so that students acquire and develop language competence and communication skills according to their level of knowledge of the Czech language (from complete beginner to very advanced). The schedules for the modules and syllabi are adapted during the semesters in order to meet the needs of our students.

Module for beginning and elementary students – A1 and A2  according to the CEFR

This module is intended for beginning and elementary students. The basis of instruction is a language course of grammar and conversation. Students also take other lessons geared especially to training pronunciation and acquiring basic knowledge of Czech spelling. In groups of beginners, lessons may be taught partially in English. Full mastery of the levels usually takes two semesters. The schedule is governed by the following study plan:

The aim of the module is to acquire the following:

  • A vocabulary of 2200-2800 Czech words
  • A basic knowledge of grammar (morphology and syntax) and word formation
  • A basic overview of Czech life and institutions (holidays and traditions, history, living, food, behavior)
  • The ability to communicate successfully in normal everyday situations

Module for intermediate students – B1 according to the CEFR

This module is intended for intermediate students, and the language of instruction is exclusively Czech. The module allows students to fully develop their previous knowledge. Instruction in a joint foundation is divided into courses according to linguistic disciplines (morphology, syntax, lexicology, oral and written expression, reading, etc.). Students acquire the practical knowledge and skills necessary for their daily lives and work (Czech for life). Mastery of the level normally takes two semesters. The schedule is governed by the following study plan:

  • A vocabulary of 2800–4000 Czech words
  • The ability to use Czech to study at the university
  • The ability to communicate successfully in a variety of situations – in the family, at school, or at work
